The 2017 National Safety Council Training Survey Results Are In

Posted by

The National Safety Council estimates that 13 workers die every day while on the job. That’s roughly 4,700 people a year, compared to 3,738 work-related deaths in 2013. Furthermore, it’s estimated that about 3.8 million people are injured or become ill from improperly maintained workplace conditions; these ill or injured employees represent a little over 1% of the entire population of the US. Safety, or lack thereof, in the workplace impacts your coworkers, friends, family, and neighbors every day.

Each year the National Safety Council polls safety professionals across the United States to gauge companies’ commitment to safety in the workplace. The results are in.

From 2015 to 2016, expenditures on safety materials per person dropped, with 72% of respondents indicating that their organization now spends $500 or less per person on training. This percentage is up from 68% in 2015. While overall budgets mostly stayed consistent with 2015, 2016 showed that fewer and fewer companies are increasing their budgets. Less money spent on training and training materials and lack of budget growth paints the picture that safety professionals are having to accomplish more with less funds each year.

83% of companies polled are using custom content to train their workforce. Many companies end up using internally developed, custom content for safety training not because they set out to do so, but because they built a safety department slowly over time and added resources as needed. This means that instructional materials are, at best, cobbled together from multiple sources. With government regulations constantly being updated, keeping accumulated safety training materials up to date is a time consuming task. Results from the poll showed that instructor-led training continued to be the most popular delivery method used for training employees about safety.

Each day, people die, are injured, or become sick because of dangers experienced in the workplace. Safety and health professionals educate employees on how to safeguard life, limb, and property. However, under increasing pressure to save costs, safety professionals must either find more efficient ways to keep their training materials updated or risk sacrificing quality in training.
